Harvard Business Review
Harvard Business Review continues to be one of the best researched publications in the industry and their blog is highly accessible. Their marketing topics range from branding insights, advertising perspectives and marketing perspectives. For instance, our friend and contributor Denise Lee Yohn recently wrote an HBR piece on creating great cultural experiences.
FastCo Design & FastCo Create
The publishers of Fast Company Magazine stay fast by publishing multiple blogs. Two of our favorites are FastCo Design & FastCo Create:
FastCo Design covers graphics, innovation, interactive, product and space design.
FastCo Create covers advertising, interactive, music and TV.
Adweek is arguably the leader in sharing news about the advertising and media worlds. The Advertising & Branding section of Adweek is jam-packed with branding-specific news. The section has articles, blog posts, galleries and videos, and it’s a great way to stay up-to-date with what’s happening in the branding world in real time.
Brand New by Under Consideration
For visual brand evolutions from the designer’s eye we recommend Brand New by Under Consideration. While it primarily covers only the aesthetic application of design (not the strategic or messaging attributes), it offers perspective on design trends and a review on the brands that are evolving visually.
Marketing Over Coffee
Marketing Over Coffee is a short (mostly around 20 minutes) podcast that covers both classic and new marketing. The hosts, John J. Wall and Christopher S. Penn, record the show in a local coffee shop every week—you’ll get used the the background noise. Their “greatest hits” includes conversations with Seth Godin and Simon Sinek, but they also host a wide range of marketing and branding industry leaders who speak on everything from SEO, AI and content marketing.
Todd Henry’s books “The Accidental Creative,” “Die Empty” and “Louder than Words” have had tremendous impact on millions in the marketing, branding and creative industries. His podcast, Accidental Creative, talks about the practices, discipline and routine needed in everyday life in order to manifest creativity into brilliant work.
Debbie Millman’s Design Matters podcast is in its 11th year and has been a staple diet for many in the design, branding and marketing world. Over the last year or so, Debbie has broadened her guests to explore the wide ranging influence design thinking plays into the business and popular culture worlds. We especially recommend her interviews with Chris Anderson of TEDx, artist Amanda Palmer, and host of On Being, Krista Tippett.
